Somewhere between here and there is often where the best adventures happen.
A good road trip becomes even better when your dog is sitting beside you, wondering why you've stopped at the last three places but haven't arrived anywhere yet.
If you're planning a road trip with your dog, a little preparation can make the journey much easier.
1. Plan Your Stops
Don't plan your route around kilometres alone.
Look for places where you can safely stop, stretch your legs and give your dog a break.
2. Pack Plenty of Water
Bring more water than you think you'll need, particularly during warmer weather.
A portable bowl makes roadside stops much easier.
3. Keep Your Dog Secure
Make sure your dog is appropriately restrained during the journey using a suitable travel harness, crate or other restraint system.
4. Bring Familiar Things
A favourite blanket or toy can make unfamiliar surroundings feel a little more comfortable.
5. Don't Forget the Lead
It's surprisingly easy to arrive somewhere beautiful and realise the lead is still sitting at home.
Keep one packed permanently in your travel kit.
6. Take Regular Breaks
Your dog probably doesn't care how quickly you reach the destination.
Give them opportunities to stretch, sniff and explore safely.
7. Research Dog-Friendly Stops
Before leaving, check accommodation, parks, cafés and attractions along your route.
It makes spontaneous adventures easier when you already know where dogs are welcome.
8. Pack Food and Treats
Keep enough of your dog's usual food with you for the journey, along with some treats for breaks.
9. Expect the Unexpected
Dogs are excellent at turning a carefully planned itinerary into something completely different.
A ten-minute stop can become a forty-minute sniffing expedition.
That's part of the fun.
10. Leave Room for Wandering
The best road trips aren't always the ones with the most destinations.
Sometimes the best decision is taking the road you didn't originally plan to take.
Take the long way.
